Success Story - Dawanna Roberson

When St. Vincent de Paul, a charitable organization with several thrift stores in Southeastern Michigan, needed assistance with staffing their stores, they reached out to EDSI at the Michigan Works! Livonia Service Center. The employer was experiencing issues with high turnover and wanted referrals of interested individuals with great work ethics. It was also important that candidates be committed to the cause of helping others in times of need, because their organization takes pride in this value.

EDSI’s Business Services Representative (BSR) Heba Alshimary met with Dawanna Roberson, an Assistant Manager with St. Vincent de Paul, to learn more about the organization and their needed positions. With this information, Heba worked with EDSI’s PATH Program staff to identify PATH participant candidates and reviewed their resumes. The strongest candidates were referred to Ms. Roberson, and she contacted and further screened them through a phone interview. A PATH participant was offered employment and started work the following week.

This initial placement was a success and prompted Ms. Roberson to follow up with Heba for assistance in hiring another store associate. A second PATH participant started with St. Vincent de Paul at the Westland thrift store on August 8, 2016. Each placement was a subsidized employment; in this arrangement, EDSI utilizes PATH funds to reimburse the employer for a predetermined percentage of an employee’s wage for up to 90 days. This is a tremendous incentive for employers and helps to open up great employment opportunities for our PATH participants.

Ms. Roberson shared that the hardest part of her past hiring efforts was identifying candidates, but with the help of EDSI’s Business Services and PATH Program staff and resources, finding the right candidate became a much smoother process. She added that, "We pride ourselves on being able to help out those in need in our communities and surrounding areas. Michigan Works! has helped aid us in doing so by providing quality candidates to help provide the manpower it takes to process the necessary product, goods and merchandise we offer our guests. We would like to thank you all for helping us help others!"
