Becoming Someone Special for our Customers
EDSI has given me a chance for a new beginning. I was a 26-year employee at a Fortune 500 company. Through changes and acquisitions, the company was sold and I needed to make a life decision – should I retire, or move to a new company? As the saying goes, “when the going gets tough, the tough get going,” so I decided to seek a new career. I joined EDSI in August 2015 as a Talent Engagement Specialist in North Carolina.
I work with customers who need jobs. I can relate because I was recently in the same position. I have compassion for people who are down and feeling worthless, and a passion for making them feel important and confident that I am here to help them. First, I register them in NC Works. I coach them on how to navigate the system and progress through the program. Customers appreciate the basic one-on-one computer class I give and thank me for taking the time to teach them new skills. This is very satisfying to me.
Professionalism is key to EDSI’s culture, but there are times when you just have to have fun with the customers and make them feel at ease. In addition to Talent Engagement, I am also working on Talent Development, meeting with individual customers to assist them in finding a new career. I keep in touch with my customers to ensure they attend class, ask how they are progressing on goals and objectives, and most importantly, find out how they feel about the program. The other day a customer came in and, with tears in her eyes, told me her little girl said she was proud of her for going to school. Another customer said, “I am proud of myself for getting passing grades, one of them the highest in the class.” She just beamed with joy. That’s when I feel my efforts are most worthwhile. The feeling of accomplishment and pride in doing something you never thought you could do is great. So, I am proud of myself for being part of EDSI where I can give guidance, motivation, inspiration and make someone else feel important and become SOMEONE SPECIAL.
