It’s no secret that companies in all employment sectors are facing challenging workforce shortages and gaps. What many companies don’t know is that apprenticeships offer a viable solution for recruiting, training and retaining world-class talent. Apprenticeships are an earn-as-you-learn, flexible workforce development tool and training strategy that can be customized to meet the needs of any business.

Apprenticeship programs consist of a combination of on-the-job training and classroom instruction with an affiliated educational partner. This combination, along with the fact that workers in an apprenticeship program earn a full-time wage while they are participating in the program, is a proven recipe for success. According to the United States Department of Labor (DOL), 91% of apprentices that complete an apprenticeship are still employed nine months later.

It goes without saying that apprenticeships are good for business … despite the misconceptions that exist. Apprenticeships have come a long way since the apprenticeship system started 75 years ago in the construction and skilled trades industries. Some people still believe that apprenticeships are only useful for entry-level positions in those industries, but that is a big misconception.

Once Upon a Punch Clock: Raising the Wonka bar on Retention Rates

The story of Willy Wonka’s Golden Ticket contest conjures up images of hundreds of peanut conglomerate workers unwrapping thousands of chocolate bars. As they rapidly try to find the Golden Ticket for Veruca Salt, the spoiled child, she eagerly and angrily awaits a prize tour of the elusive Wonka Candy Factory.

As the workers feverishly unwrap, Veruca’s panicking father offers a tiny pay bonus to whomever finds the Golden Ticket, in hopes the workers will unwrap even faster. This bears resemblance to many operations dealing with high turnover, where employees work tirelessly for a glimmer of recognition or a reward. When an employee leaves, it is an additional burden and cost on the employer. What do we do about this? Don’t get Slugworthed into thinking employees only want more pay … let’s take a closer look. It may not be a matter of pay at all. An everlasting employee comes from an employer who hones in on the overall happiness of the team.

Hiring Ex-Offenders Can Be a Smart Business Decision

Over the years, I have had numerous opportunities to present workshops on employment of ex-offenders. As I stand in front of the audience, I am always amazed at the shock on people’s faces when we discuss the sheer number of the population in prisons and jails, and the costs associated with incarceration. For example, did you know:

  • Over 80 billion dollars is spent on Corrections each year - Bureau of Justice Statistics
  • Seven million people are under correctional control, including individuals on probation and parole – U. S. Department of Justice
  • The United States has less than 5 percent of the world's population, but it has almost a quarter of the world's prisoners – New York Times
  • 1 out of 100 adults in the United States is in prison.
  • Once released from prison, 2 out of 3 people are rearrested within a year. This is known as recidivism.
  • Over the course of the last 20 years, the amount of money spent on prisons increased by 570%, while the money spent on education increased by only 33%.
  • The cost per year to house an inmate varies from state to state. For example, in New York the cost is $47,421 per year, while in Pennsylvania, it is $42,339.

Needless to say, the above statistics clearly point out that we are facing enormous challenges. The costs associated with incarceration are staggering and the population of prisoners who will eventually be released and in need of jobs is becoming enormous.
